Yesterday was very unexpected I must say. I woke up thinking that it would pretty much like every other year: do all the “normal” stuff I do in a day and later maybe have cake with a few friends.
Well, needless to say, but I’m saying it anyway… that was NOT what happened.
Let me back track a few days…
Tuesday night, I went to Norms with my friends Andrew and Brooke for food and studying. During this time Jonathan calls me and says something like: “So, tomorrow’s your birthday.” “Yeah, I think so,” I replied. “I heard you had choral union till around 5:30 so I was wondering if you maybe wanted to grab dinner at the cafe and then watch some sort of movie afterward.” At first I thought this was kind of odd because 1) Jonathan doesn’t usually call me, and 2) he’s asking me to go watch a movie at someone else’s apartment.
Well I decided to not think anything of it other than the fact that it was nice that he remembered my birthday and had called and what not.
So the next day was my birthday. I wake up and it pretty much goes like a normal day, with the exception of being told “happy birthday” by almost half of the school.
I eat lunch with good friends, and Carrie Jo gave me a backpack purse thing, so all was well. Then at the end of Choral Union, when I thought I couldn’t sing another note nor stand another minute, Dr. Miller announces that it is my birthday and that all 250-something people sing to me. Embaressing, but cool at the same time.
After that, I check my voice mail because my mother called like 5 times and then Jonathan calls me again. I was thinking to myself, “this really is strange for him to call me this much, I wonder what’s going on?” But once again, I decided to not think about it and go along with whatever it was. So we grab food at the cafe and head over to Tim/Alex/Andrew/Matt’s apartment and watch the Marx Brothers. Around 7:15, the movie is over and I text Jocelyn to tell her that I was coming over. “Okay, she replies. “We have cake for you.”
“I guess we better be going,” says Jonathan.
“Can I come along too?” asks Alex.
“Of course, of course!” I say.
Matt decided to come along as well, so off the troupe went to LA 54. When I got there, the door was locked, which I thought was odd. So I got out my key and opened it.
“Happy birthday!” says Jocelyn and Melanie. Melanie was holding a balloon bouquet.
“Aww, thanks guys,” I said.
“We bought you a cake,” says Jocelyn. “And we even cleaned the apartment.”
“That’s great,” I said.
“We even cleaned the storage room.” she added. “Go check and see.”
“Erm, okay,” I said, totally unexpecting anything. I opened the door and about half a dozen purple balloons spill out of the room. I see many faces and hear the word “surprise!” being shouted by each of them. There was about twenty people all crowded into the room with about 72 balloons (there was about 50 left by the time they got through popping several). There was also two cakes (one my roommates bought, and one Carrie Jo made for me). It was so much fun! After eating cake and unspiked punch, I played and sang two songs I wrote. Then several people left and a few others came in and we played several games. Then Jocelyn, Jonathan, Rich, and I went to Norms for food. And that preetty much concludes my thoughts on this matter.
